how to update Safari from 6.1.6 to 9.1.2?

I have a Macbook Air OS X version 10.7.5 I get frustrated by continuing to try and update my browser from Safari 6.1.6 to the latest version 9.1.2. I get the message my browser is up to date! Yet when I go onto the Oxford Encyclopaedia site it tells me my browser is not up to date! and the latest version is 9.1.2 When I go to the Apple store at Bondi Junction the staff member I spoke to said the message from the OE was a scam! At the moment I am maintaining my decorum but it is wearing thin Anyone can shed some light on this?

You would have to upgrade your Mac to the newest OS X El Capitan.

Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

Your Mac is running v10.7.5. Safari cannot be updated beyond version 6.1.6 on a Mac running Lion v10.7.

It's not a scam. The only way to update Safari is to upgrade OS X meaning El Capitan.

El Capitan is free and available at the Mac App Store. El Capitan requires about 9GB's of available storage space.
