Migrating from 10.5 to a new Mac 10.11

I am helping a neighbor to purchase a new MacBook. I will need to migrate their accounts, email, etc. from their old Mac to the new one. They have an old PowerPC iMac running 10.5.8 . From my research so far, I know that PowerPc Macs can't be upgraded past 10.5.8 .

What steps do I need to take to migrate their old data from 10.5.8 to a new MacBook running 10.11 El Capitan ?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Not my Mac

Hello,

In Mail's File menu item, choose Import Mailboxes…, choose Mail for Mac OSX, choose the top Mail folder from the 10.5 User's Library folder, wait while it searches for boxes it can import, choose the ones you want, they'll be Imported into a Box named Import, from there you can move them to Inbox or where ever. 🙂

What I finally did was buy a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter, put the iMac in Target mode, and the Migration Assistant did all the rest! It recognized all the accounts and gave me options to copy over applications, accounts, files, etc.

I didn't bother to copy over any of the applications, they were all pre-10.6. Took about three hours, but everything important got copied over.
