Trouble resizing .dmg file

I have a password-protected .dmg file that is currently 10 GB. I want to bring it down to 2 GB. I've tried resizing it in disk utility, but it doesn't seem to work. It just stays at 10 GB. I've tried a whole bunch of things and for the life of me I don't know what the problem is. The file is read and write, I should be able to change it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, disk images created through Disk Utility cannot be resized once created. You would need to create a new, smaller disk image, copy the contents of the existing one to it, then delete the original.
