Q: Automatic opening windows for and download of AMC

Hi All. While I'm using Safari windows keep popping up for and it keeps automatically downloading Advanced Mac Cleaner. Between 12:30 and 4:00 windows popped up and it downloaded six times and I was nowhere near any related site. I was reading forums and real estate sites. The window pops up and it starts downloading. Then I have to discard the download. Does anybody know how to stop this?  I'm using Safari 5.1.10 on OSX 10.6.8. TIA

    If the pop-up reloads, force quit Safari (command - option/alt - esc) and reopen with the shift key held down. If that doesn't work, disconnect from the Internet, go to Safari/History and delete the website. Quit and reopen with the shift key held down.

    Hi SeptQ. Thanks for the reply. By the way I also keep getting windows trying to get me to download Reimage and windows telling me that my subscription to Macafee has expired and trying to get me to renew it ( I never had one. ) and windows trying to get me to download MacKeeper. Also I keep getting windows purporting to be from Apple Support with a real looking Apple title bar originally telling me that I had 3 viruses but now saying that I have four and that I should download MacKeeper to rectify the problem. I find it hard to believe that Apple monitors my Mac for viruses and especially that it recommends downloading ang running an application that isn't in the App Store. all this started after I stupidly downloaded, installed and ran MacKeeper.

    I already see some issues. I had a ShoppyTool Safari extension that I uninstalled. I guess that I had more ShoppyTool stuff that I didn't know about. I will remove what they suggest and report back. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Yeah. I already did that and it worked. There is one questionable item left that I can't find. I did all kinds of searches for it with no luck. It's not the unknown file. It's under user launch agents. I made it Bold, Italic, Underlined to make it easier to spot.

       ~/Library/Safari/Extensions/Search Tech.safariextz

     

    In Finder, go to the Go/Go to folder menu item and paste the above in which should take you to the file. You can also look in your Home/User folder/Library/Safari/Extensions folder.

     

    Then boot into the Safe Mode to 'reset' and start normally.
