new library

I started a new photos library on my laptop. I have yet to turn iCloud on for that library. I have another iCloud library with my desktop which is the main one and hooked to iCloud. What will happen if I turn iCloud on with the laptop photos library? Will the libraries merge?

I turned on the iCloud on my laptop and saw it was preparing all the photos from my main library. Does this mean that library will wind up on my laptop? If it does will it act like the phone where images are only accessible with an Internet connection and not be the real file on the hard drive. I don't have room on the laptop for the entire library but it would be nice to have access to it.

For the computer, go to Photos/Preferences/iCloud and select Optimize. That will reduce the space required by about 90% when fully effective. You should then have access to the images, but at a reduced size. Another option is to put the Library on an external hard drive and download originals.

Article is for iPhoto, but the basics are the same.
