Q: My AirPort Time Capsule can only act as a WIFI AP

Hi.

I brought a Time Capsule with my Mac Pro. It worked well since yesterday.

I set up the Time Capsule as a WIFI AP, bridging to my local network. There is a working router (wired) at home.

Problem is from the AirPort Utility of my Mac Pro and my iPhone, my Time Capsule is displayed with an exclamation mark saying "Device Not Found". I cannot connect to sharing disk on it through afp, nor smb. Time Machine function is gone too. It also failed when trying to connect to the sharing disk from another computer connected to this Time Capsule by wired network.

But at the same time, the WiFi service works well.

I've tried to power recycle. The sharing disk will be available. But if I start the Time Machine backing up, it will failed within seconds.

Any idea?

Thanks.

There are numerous posts here related to this issue.

Per chance, did you configure your new Time Capsule for Back to My Mac (BtMM)?

If so, the "temporary" solution is to remove/disable the BtMM option, as follows:

    • Run the AirPort Utility.
    • Select the base station, and then, select Edit.
    • On the Base Station tab, go to the Back to My Mac section at the bottom of the window.
    • If you have any entries here, select it and then, click on the minus "-" button to delete it.
    • Click up Update and allow the base station to restart.

If you did not enable BtMM, we have some other options for you to try.

I'm having the same issue as well...

How can you "select the base station, and then, select Edit", if the Device is not Found in the first place? In Airport Utility, I can see the TimeCapsule (icon and name), but when I click on it, I get the "Device Not Found" pop-up. The only option on the pop-up is to "forget" the device and remove it from the network...

    Thanks!

    Thanks for your tip.

Actually, I've wiped the disk out and connect to my router by LAN directly.

After removing BtMM setting, I'm trying to start a new backup instance. So far, it works (backup is just started a while, not finished yet). When the backing up process finished, I will try to put it back as my AP.

    Thanks again.

I suggest that you first try to use the Configure Other... option from the AirPort Utility's menu bar. Enter the base station IP address, the default is: 10.0.1.1, and the base station administrator's password.

Thanks @Tesserax - that did the trick, and remove the BtMM also fixed the problem. Based on the volume of people talking about this now, I trust Apple is looking into this?

    Thanks again!!

We are all users on the forum here.....just like you....so we really don't know what Apple might be doing unless someone reports on information that they have learned while talking to Apple. That would be second hand information, of course.

Yesterday, one user reported after his conversation with Apple Support that Apple was not even aware of anything unusual that might be occurring with AirPort Utility.

Apple is a notoriously secretive company, so it is not likely that we will hear much from them until they publish a suggested "solution", assuming that they feel that there really might be an issue.
