Q: Can Time Capsule work on a shared network?

So soon I'll be moving into private student accommodation, this means that the wifi is shared. I'm wondering whether:

1. Whether Time Capsule will work on a shared network?

2. Whether it will be secure? - Can others see/access/modify my Time Capsule?

Thank you

The Time Capsule needs to connect to a modem or another router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. If you are saying that the only connection that you will have is via wireless, then unfortunately the Time Capsule will not work on that type of connection.

Even if it were possible to set up the Time Capsule to connect to the shared wireless network using wireless (it's not), all of your backups would occur over the shared network, and users would be able to "see" the Time Capsule on the network.

If you already have a Time Capsule, the best set up to consider would be to manually connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the three LAN <--> ports on the Time Capsule, turn off the WiFi on the Mac, and back up the Mac to the Time Capsule.

Once the backup is complete, disconnect the Ethernet cable and turn the WiFi back on at your Mac.
