Aug 13, 2016 1:47 PM in response to crwspringerby think.different,★HelpfulIt should take the 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
Although Apple says it maxes out at 16gb that model can actually go up to 32 GB.
MacTracker (free in the AppStore) is a very useful app for all spec info on every Apple device every made.

Aug 13, 2016 1:54 PM in response to think.differentby crwspringer,I'm really confused bc this is the RAM that the mac came with. Is it possible that they put in the wrong ram, and that is why it has been problematic?

Aug 13, 2016 2:11 PM in response to crwspringerby den.thed,What does the Overview tab on that panel say...?
If it say's Mid 2011, then someone has installed the incorrect RAM in it.
If you bought it used, then perhaps it was the previous owner.
If you bought it new, then perhaps it was while it was out for a repair.
What RAM modules were used when it was upgraded to 12GB...?
Inferior and/or multi speed modules can cause all sorts of inaccurate info and problems.

Aug 13, 2016 2:59 PM in response to crwspringerby den.thed,I've heard of folks getting extras in refurbished units. But 12GB seems a little odd, when new they came with 4GB that was configurable to 16GB.
iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications
Personally I would physically check the existing modules, because it sounds to me like a couple of slower modules somehow found there way into that iMac at some point.

Aug 13, 2016 8:28 PM in response to crwspringerby etresoft,Hello crwspringer,
You said your machine has been running slow "for the past few months". At what point did it start to run slowly? You should certainly have the correct RAM, but if it was running fine before and then started running more slowly, then RAM may not be the cause or there could be some other problem.
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etrecheck.com, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.
Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

Aug 15, 2016 10:20 AM in response to etresoftby crwspringer,I "thought" it appeared to run slower when i installed el capitan, but that could have just been what I was convincing myself.
I just installed 32GB of the correct ram. Other than starting up and opening safari I haven't really "tested" the speed yet.
I will let everyone know how it goes.
