Q: Quicktime Pro doesn't play sound

Hi,

I have purchased Quicktime Pro. It works fine on my old MacPro (Lion!).However, on my new MacBook Pro (El Capitan), especially with films converted in QT, I can see the image but hear no sound. A pop up window opens up saying that some codecs are missing but it doesn't say which one in particular..!

Any ideas on what's happening?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Can't provide specicific solutions without additional information regarding codecs involved. However...

    1. Based on the modal messages you reference, it appears your files contain audio tracks encoded by codecs that are either not playback and/or are not conversion compatible with the media player you are using under El Capitan.
    2. The modal message is triggered by a "general" error trap and expects the user to determine which codecs are not compatible and to then take appropriate action as may be needed or possible.
    3. If the files are working in QT 7 Pro under Lion, then open the files on that system and check the "Inspector" and/or "Properties" windows to determine which audio codecs have issues. Alternatively, you could try opening the files in VLC on either the new or old systems and, if they open, either play them in that app or use its "Media Information" window to determine the audio codecs creating problems.
    4. As a generic solution, if files open and play in VLC, then use any conversion app based on the open FFmpeg AV processing tool project package (e.g., the free HandBrake utility) and re-export the source files as H.264/AAC MP4 or H.264/AAC/AC3 M4V files which are compatible with all current Mac OS/IOS devices under both QT X and QT 7 structure embeds.
