Q: Just upgraded my late '09 iMac to 16 GB Memory and downloaded El Capitan. On boot up, I can use my password just fine. Then before it lets me do anything it wants the keychain password for "local items" but rejects my login password. What should I do

SInce I cannot access ANYTHING else all the advice to go into keychain access etc is not going to work. I have tried to cancel it, but it and other menu boxes just pop back up. This did not happen when I upgraded my 2012 Mac minis. Please help me resolve this. I need this computer to work from home, and I upgraded because I was told it was compatible and it would then read all my Pages and Numbers files from the office where I use the Mac minis. I am really upset that Apple wants me to pay for answering my questions when it is THEIR PRODUCT issue! I have used Apple machines for nearly 20 years, and deserve better treatment!

Log in password is not the same as Keychain password. Check your notes, if you wrote it down somewhere. Besides, you can operate your computer just fine without Keychain. You'll just need to enter all other passwords and logins manually.

I appreciate you trying to solve this, but I have no notes (or I would have already consulted them) and I CANNOT DO ANYTHING with the computer. The picture of El Capitan is fuzzy in the background, I have NOTHING ELSE on the screen but the popup window demanding the keychain password. Please, this is not a case of wanting keychain access for myself. This is a case where operating software in the early set up stages after fresh download is demanding something I cannot give. I have never encounterd this problem in all of the other OS upgrades I have done over the years, including two months ago (to El Capitan) on the Mac Minis. I have never created a keychain password that differed from my login. I haven't changed the login password since I bought the machine years ago. So please help me find a real solution to this problem. Thank you.

Does the dialog box look like the one below? What happens when you click on Cancel?

What happens when you boot into Safe Mode (hold down Shift key at startup)?

Thank you for your reply. I was away from this machine for a few days. Yes, it looks the same except the black box in front of the lock in your picture is replaced in mine by one that looks like an old appleworks icon with the pencil, ruler, and pen compass. Clicking on "cancel" just makes the box flash out and in with a new application wanting the password, even when I started it up while pressing on the shift key (which did not put it into safe mode). The three apps that want the password are Messages Agent, accountsd and internetAccountsMigrator, all for the "Local Items" keychain.

I am grateful for your attempt to help, but I cannot access anything that this article asks me to open. The problem always comes before the desktop loads. I am the administrator on this computer. There is only my account and a guest account. On startup I can choose my account and the enter my password but then the keychain request dialog box appears and lets me go no further, whether in normal or safe mode. Can you help me get past this block?
