How do I finalize a CD or DVD after burning?

Years ago I finalized disks so they could be played or viewed on different machines. When I burn to a DVD OR CD RW disk, it will usually play on all of my machines. But a standard, write once disk will not play on any of my DVD or CD machines with the exception of CD music disks.

I remember having done this finalize routine, but it has been so long that I have no memory of how to do this. Also throw in the fact that my memory has been damaged by a nearly fatal accident when I was struck by a truck while crossing in the crosswalk. This situation is better these days but things like this finalizing thing...forgetaboutit...oh yeah I have. Sorry...

Any help out there?
