Q: New iMac with overheating problems

Hello

Long time Mac user! From the Macintosh Plus 1986 to new owner of a 27" i7 iMac. I had a number of different Mac's.

Why can't my iMac run at a reasonable temperature? It's aways running with all all programs turned off. Activity monitor CPU/120% / MDS_stores running at 90c or higher. Sure I can get it fix that by restarting, but the question is whats going on? If someone has a a fix for this please let me know

Thanks

Marcell

If the iMac thinks it was in danger of overheating it will let you know and shut down.

My Mini CPU is at 8% and at 75c.

With CPU at 120, there are background processes working hard for you. They could be anything from syncing your data, downloading iTunes data such as Genius playlists, to your Photos app uploading all your images to iCloud. This is especially true on new hardware.

FWIW, the modern, thin iMacs, generally run warm, but if you're not seeing Overheating warnings flashing on the screen, the Mac is OK.

The over heating happens when I'm away from the unit at night. It's in sleep mode. Now with the new iMac it hasn't shut down or rebooted like my old mac mini 2011. It would do the same thing then shut down and reboot.

I thought that the new iMac would perform better, but its up to the same tricks. I'm not sure why it's performing hight performance, hi CPU% usesage late at night, All apps are shut down,. Kernel tasks can be a problem.

Someone at Apple must have an answer, From now on I'm shutting the system down until I get some kind of answer.

    Thanks for your comments.

Restart the computer holding down the command - option/alt - P - R keys before the gray screen appears. Continue to hold until you hear the startup chime for the second time.

    Reset NVRAM/PRAM

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

    Reset SMC
