Q: iTunes movies with wifi but no internet?

Hello all,

I have moved to rural northern MI and currently have limited internet capability.  My time capsule generated wifi goes throughout the house and both my laptop and apple tv are connected to it although there is no outside internet connection.

My question is, why, if my iTunes purchased movies are downloaded to my computer, will they not airplay without an internet connection? I keep getting an error message even though the apple tv see the movies on my laptop they will not load or play over wifi. It is going to be pretty frustrating if iTunes requires a connection so they can monitor your activity for whatever reason.  I have purchased these movies in good faith and do not feel I should need to have any kind of external connection to view them.

Anyone have an idea how to address this?

Thanks

Once you have turned on AirPlay, choose the second option from the AirPlay menu as described here:

    The above comes from:

Thanks for the reply, however, that does not seem to be an option for me on my laptop.  When I play the movie in iTunes and select airplay and my apple tv it keeps trying to connect to the iTunes store and as I have no internet connection it gives me an error message saying that it cannot be completed. I also do not have any other options under airplay then Computer or Apple TV. The extended desktop, mirroring and use airplay display are not there to use.

So you have some more information on my setup.....

2008 1st generation macbook aluminum running El Capitan.

    1st generation Apple TV

    1st generation apple Time Capsule

I show full bars on my wifi connection at both the laptop and the apple tv and have tried using a newer model netgear wifi modem set up directly next to the apple tv, to no avail.

Not sure what the issue is but it is frustrating to have 4 movies purchased and not be able to watch any of them due to what appears to be a need to be connected to the iTunes store while watching them from my laptop on which they are downloaded.

I'm glad you listed your equipment.  It appears as if your equipment (1st generation Apple TV) fails to meet the requirements listed under "Requirements for using AirPlay" in the article I attached above (repeated here):
