Q: cannot sign into Safari - keep getting Safari Quit unexpectedly

Cannot sign into Safari. It comes on but it instantly keeps quitting. Then I get the: 'Safari web content quit unexpectedly'. The window doesn't close it just keeps repeating that it's closing and the warning keeps appearing. This happens repeatedly. Safari won't quit. I can shut the window using the red dot but Safari is actually still on. I try to open a new window and again the same thing: a blank window with 'a problem occurred with this window so it was reloaded' and then it does it again and I get the report to Apple again and again.

I'm using Firefox to send this question.

OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

    Hi,

When Safari crashes, it's usually due to Safari extensions or third party plug-ins.

Check this out: When I open Safari the first window quits with the message and keeps quitting and I can go to Safari extensions on the top under Safari and it will open the Safari extension page and now while at this window I can go to other web pages but if I try to open a new window I again have the same problem. I can't even close the window unless I use the red dot or close Safari. You see even though it says Safari quit unexpectedly it really hasn't quit. It's there I just can't open any windows.

What OS version and Safari version are you using?

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    Safe Mode

    Safe Mode - Mavericks

    Safe Mode - About

    Safe Mode - Yosemite

Safe Mode - About El Capitan

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan.

Here's what I did do. I opened as Guest which shows the Yosemite default desktop and I can open Safari from there with no problem.

I have not tried to make a new administrator but that may be the only course. Was hoping not to have to back up, reload certain programs, etc. I tried Library/Preferences but there is no Safari apple.com Safari plist.

Any other ideas before I back up on time machine? Won't time machine reinstall the problem?

If you reinstall from Time Machine, you need to install a backup that pre-dates the problem.

Did you try the Safe Mode?

Do you have Trusteer Rapport  software from any bank installed?

Use Firefox to download this software.

Run EtreCheck and post the report here or check for the presence of Trusteer.

        http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open and select ”Open”.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” .

Paste it here when you reply.

If you see “Truster……………” listed under 3rd Party Preference Panes, remove it.

    Safari 9

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.
