Q: Yosemite does not allow incoming connections even if the firewall is off

OS: Macbook Air OS X Yosemite10.10.5.

The application firewall in 'Security & Privacy' is off.

I am able to ping other machines in the same subnet from this Mac, but I cannot ping this Mac from other machines. Using Wireshark to capture packets I found the Mac actually received the ICMP packets from other machines, but it didn't respond.

I tried to enable 'System Preferences'->'Sharing'->'Remote Login', but it doesn't work if I remotely login from other machines.

I have vague impression it worked well before I upgraded it to Yosemite.

Please help. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Eric,

Thank you so much for pointing me to this useful tool. I managed to solve this problem by uninstalling the application Magican which comes with a built-in application firewall. Although I am pretty sure I didn't start the firewall service, or maybe I ever started it but then I turned it off, it seems somehow the firewall was still in effect.

First suggestion. Uninstall Avast. Use their uninstaller.

    1. Open the Avast user interface, click Avast in the Menu bar on the top-left of the screen, and select Uninstall Avast.
    2. If asked for authentication, enter the administrator Name and Password.
    3. When the uninstallation is finished click Quit and Avast Mac Security is then completely removed from your Mac.

You are welcome.  Avast and most people advise not to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

    CleanMyMac 3 Uninstall

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.
