iMovie 5.0 compatible camcorder list

I am looking into buying a new sony mini DVD camcorder. I was looking on the apple site for the list of imovie 5.0 compatible camcorders, but I can not find it. Anybody knows where it is? Please help!

Imac, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi petanka:

Welcome to discussions! 🙂

I don't think there is an up-to-date compatible camcorder list available.

But, I can tell you that if you are planning to use a DVD camera with imovie or iDVD, then forget it. You really need to purchase a DV Tape camcorder that has a DV In / Out Firewire port.

Just plug - N - Play

Sue

PS...don't forget the tripod.

I'm looking for a camcorder for my iMovie/iBook crazy 17 year old daughter. She's done amazing things with iMovie using just the little clips from her pocket digital camera. I've read enough to know we want MINI-DV format. She likes the Sony DCR-HC26. But I hear conflicting things about Sony -- that they aren't necessarily compatible. Even Sony Customer Support said they "don't support macs." And on this discussion board, I see similar comments...but from awhile back. Any advice for a mother trying to make the right decision?

If your daughter is anything like mine you may want to consider a lower priced option. I just purchased a Canon ZR500 MiniDV Camcorder for a friend (I have a previous model) for just over $200. I'm happy with the quality, but it's certainly not professional grade. It has pass through (will allow you to digitize analog stuff) but quite frankly I don't know if it takes stills as I don't ever use it for that. Hope that helps.

thanks! i've been going back and forth on that issue, too...the analog passthrough option. It would be great if she could utilize video from her past, from our older cameras. The Sony I was considering for $300 didn't offer that option. I'll look at the Canon. The apple website actually recommends them.

Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) I also have an ibookG4 & desktop G4

Check to make sure the Canon I suggested has pass through, I know my ZR 100 does, but I didn't think to look at my buddies and make sure - just assumed it did.

I looked on Amazon.com for price comparisons - BEWARE!!! google the retailer for any negative feedback - there are some REALLY shady camera sellers out there. My third camera from Beach Camera with no complaints, but I'm not making a recommendations here.

Pass through in my opinion is a must. I've put all of my vhs's, 8mm tapes, etc on DVD's (a stand alone dvd burner is also a really nice thing to have for about $100).

Hope your daughter has fun with it!
