Q: timemachine backup bigger than 2TB not possible?

Hi everybody,

I expierence a strange problem. I have my server configured to serve as a Time Machine. I have a external drive 6 TB connected (thunderbolt). Now I want to backup my client. Backup is estimated to be 2.38TB. Now Time Machine is aborting the backup by saying there is not enough space. The space is initially indicated as 6TB, but after failing 2TB. I have created a folder on first hirachy on external drive, but no effect. It looks like the server app isn't able to do backups bigger than 2TB. I can't find any documentation regarding this topic. Anyone any suggestions? All software is latest.

Thanks and greetings from switzerland.

CU Stephan

    Hi Stephan,

it is possible to have a TimeMachine Backup bigger then 2TB (I have several between 3 and 4TB on my server).

Maybe you created the initial backup with a quota of 2TB. Even if you increased the size afterwards in server settings, the sparsebundle - which holds the backup - stays at 2TB. You have to increase this manually:

(BTW: This website holds all information about TimeMachine you need to know!)

    Cheers - Peter

    Hi Stephan from Switz,

    - Within the Server app -> Time Machine -> Backup Destinations:  double click on the backup destination and check that the Backup Limit is set to be greater than your client backup in GB, say 4000GB to start with.
