Aug 14, 2016 3:05 AM in response to Teemiddxby lllaass,I am a little confused since Apple's Time Capsule incorporates a router.
If yo mean does the TC have to be connect to modem/internet the answer is not except with a connection to the modem/internet computer can't connect to the internet. Without a connection to model/internet TC can sill be used for Time Machine backup

Aug 14, 2016 3:11 AM in response to lllaassby Teemiddx,Thank You, I am afraid I am not very tech savvy, let me explain, my modem/router for my network is in a difficult to access location in my home so connecting a time capsule to it is challenging.
All I want is whether I can put my time capsule in say my living room and it will act as a back up for my Mac
Thanks
Tee

Aug 14, 2016 7:23 AM in response to Teemiddxby Bob Timmons,The Time Capsule must connect to your modem/router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. Since an Ethernet cable can be run up to about 325 feet or 100 meters with no signal loss, you should be able to locate the Time Capsule just about anywhere you want.....unless your mansion is larger than normal.

Aug 14, 2016 8:01 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby lllaass,That is not really true. If his modem also has a router he can connect to that when he want to connect to the internet.
He can have a separate network with the Time Capsule and connect to that network when he want to backup with Time Machine.

Aug 14, 2016 8:10 AM in response to lllaassby Bob Timmons,Hopefully, you are not thinking of using using the Time Capsule to produce a wireless network without having an Internet connection. This type of setup is not officially supported by Apple, the user won't be able to update the product, use Back to My Mac, etc. No help from Apple if the user has trouble with backups.
