Saving read pages in Ibooks

I am using Ibooks for the 1st time to read a book on my Ipad mini. I am having problems where when I am finished reading and close out of the book it will not save the last page that I read. When I open the book up again it will start right back out at the beginning of the book. I have tried using the bookmark tab and this did not work. Are there any other settings that I should make sure are set up?
