Superdrive problem- error 69889 occurring + 'skipping over damaged area' although all discs are clean without scratches?

Hi, I recently bought a new superdrive dvd player for my macbook pro and at first use it doesn't seem to be working.

Basically I have read though the simple instructions, have my mac up to date and the dvd system loads for a long time on the initial copyright screen and eventually skips randomly to a part on the dvd and when i try rewinding to the beginning it loads and says 'skipping over damaged area' or something like that. When I minimise the screen and try to press any of the buttons such as play/pause/fastforward it automatically states 'error 69889'. All of the discs I have used (total of 4 different ones) have all been clean/ new so I dont think it could be them. Could something be wrong internally? Or is it a problem with my Macbook itself? Just to note, i am able to close the programme down no problem as well as eject the disc easily too, it just wont seem to play them!

Thank you

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
