Q: In converting my Keynote (09) slide show to .mov, I always end up with double slides on slides with sound, one with sound and one without sound. Why? How do I fix it?

In attempting to convert a Keynote (09) slide show to .mov format, I end up with double slides on the slides that have sound. This makes the total video almost twice as long as I wish. How do I make the conversion with only the sound slides appearing and eliminating the silent repeats?

You will need to confirm what Mac OS and Keynote version you are using as your profile is showing very old software that is outdated and no longer supported. I would guess its Keynote version 4 if you are using a G5 Mac.

Iv never heard of Keynote doing what you describe in any version, so we need details of how you have the presentation set up. If you post a sample file that shows this issue on Dropbox I can examine it on my old Power Mac.

My apologies for not providing sufficient specific information. This is my first attempt on this site, and I am finding the process of signing up, asking a question and replying to your answer very confusing. I just lost a detailed description to your request for more specifics looking for a "send" button and apparently clicking on the wrong button and everything disappeared, and I couldn't retrieve it back again. Well, here goes again. I am using my MacBook Pro (5,5 -- mid 2009, not my iMac G5) to make a Keynote (5.0.3) slide show. I am not very experienced with using Keynote but have managed to produce several slide shows successfully. This one I want to convert to a video to upload to sites like Facebook or YouTube. This Keynote slide show has about a dozen slides, the first two have no sound. The remaining ones each contain a verse of a song which my granddaughter and I recorded using Audacity to iTunes to Keynote. This may or may not be relevant, but I designed each slide using PrintShop 2, converted the files to .png and then dragged them into their appropriate position in Keynote. Then I dragged each verse of the song into its appropriate slide in Keynote and set up Keynote to advance automatically. The slide show in Keynote works perfectly. But in converting to .mov format (Quicktime 10.0) the sound slides repeat, the first with sound, the second without sound, lengthening the exposure time to each slide to twice as long. I don't have dropbox. Hope this helps. -- Roger --

and set up Keynote to advance automatically

Keynote is giving the QuickTime export module conflicting information when Keynote is set to self-playing.

Set the presentation to Normal, then export to QuickTime as follows:

Inspector > Document > Document:   then in the Presentation Type dropdown menu; select Normal.

Let me know how that works.

Thanks for the suggestion. I set the presentation type to Normal, clicked on export and selected QuickTime. In the QuickTime box I was given the option of choosing for Playback Uses: Manual Advance, Hyperlinks Only, and Fixed Timing. I ended up choosing Fixed Timing (Manual Advance didn't play) but didn't really like that option either because it seemed to be asking me to choose slide duration and build duration times for all the slides (one setting only for each), but I chose it anyway. The resulting conversion plays, but does not solve the problem of the double slides, first with sound then without sound. I tried other combinations but they either didn't work at all or they worked incorrectly. I did some research on the internet. I think the problem is related to QuickTime. Either my QuickTime (10.0) is corrupted or it doesn't work right with slides that have sound files from iTunes on them. I forgot to mention that I have OS 10.6.8. One place I read this: "If QuickTime Player (version 10) doesn't work with your older media formats, the Legacy QuickTime Player 7 may help." I don't know if this applies to me or not. At another place I read something about QuickTime having conflicts with iTunes -- which I didn't really understand. So maybe I should be on the support community for QuickTime site rather than on this site. One post said that QuickTime 10 wouldn't play .mov files. My version plays them but doesn't play them correctly. I'm sort of at my wits end about this. Any suggestions?  -- Roger -- P.S. I have another older Intel Computer  (2007 model) with the same OS, Keynote and QuickTime versions. I think I'll try the conversion on it once and see what happens.

Any user on any computer whether Windows or Mac, will need Quicktime Player version 7 to playback exported manual advance Quicktime files from Keynote.

It is available for down load from the Apple website here:     QuickTime Player version 7 Mac

I downloaded QuicktTime 7 and installed it. In making the conversion to .mov I can get it to play by selecting the option "manual advance" in the QuickTime box, but it still does the double-time slide thing. I used my older intel iMac (2007 model, O.S. 10.6.8) this time to make the conversion, but it does the same as my MacBook Pro (mid 2009 model, with same O.S.) Now I'm thinking about making a recorded version, but without adding narration and then trying to convert it to .mov.  Any suggestions? -- Roger -- (P.S. In the option box of QuickTime, I still don't like the choices of either "manual advance" or "fixed time." My Keynote is set to advance automatically and while most of the slides have the same fixed times, a couple of the slides are different fixed times. And why select "manual advance" if my slide show is set to advance automatically?) There is no option to "advance automatically" or to run "normal."

Im stuck for a reply to your last post.

If you send me your Keynote file, or a part of it, I can deconstruct it to see what may be causing this problem.

Upload it using my email seen in my profile or use Dropbox by clicking this link to the website:      Dropbox
