Mystified by podcast behavior

For months now, when I've subscribed to a new podcast via iTunes, it ends up in a separate category from my older podcasts calls "not subscribed." I can access and play them, but I sometimes have to use the feed button to do so. In addition, I don't seem to be able to get rid of them once played, even by selecting "remove download." Maybe they're not actually taking up memory, but it does create clutter. Then the other day a podcast I'd been listening to for years suddenly shifted into "not subscribed," and to get the latest episodes I had to use the feed. What the heck is going on? Do I need to resubscribe to the "unsubscribed" podcasts? Will that lead to duplicates?

One possible explanation...

If you're using iTunes and an iDevice, there's an option to sync podcasts on both. In that case any action you take on your iPod will be reflected in iTunes. As an example, you subscribe to a podcast in iTunes, you sync them to iPod. If you unsubscribe to it on iPod because you only listen to it via iTunes, the hat podcast will be unsubscribed everywhere.

I usually listen to podcasts on an iPod Touch (I have an iPhone—brand new SE replacing an older model—but I prefer to use the Touch). When I find out about a new podcast, I go to iTunes to subscribe (I'm not aware of any other way to do it), but to listen I use the Podcast app. How do I sync in the way that you are alluding to?
