Keyboard shortct for turning on Computer

I dropped my MacBook Air and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working. I took it to the Genius Bar and the repair was going to be $700. Instead of repairing, I am going to eventually buy a new MacBook Air and restore from my old one. The guy told me to buy a wired keyboard and mouse and I would be able to back it up. The problem is, I can't turn the computer on if the power button is on the installed keyboard and it is not working. The guy at the Genius Bar used some kind of shortcut on a wired keyboard to turn on my computer. I don't remember what he did and didn't realize it until I got home. Does anybody know how I can get it to turn on or should I go back?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), iOS 8.1.2, I have a Mac air, iPhone and iPad.

Sorry, but there is no keyboard shortcut to power on the MacBook Air. As you know the power button replaced the Eject button for these models. If there is a shortcut for this, Apple has NOT provided it in their list of keyboard shortcuts.

Instead, it may be possible to do so but would require you to open up the laptop. Here is a YouTube video describing the procedure. I would not recommend this unless this is your only option.
