Q: Move movies off of my primary HD

My SSD drive has filled up, with movies being 50 Gigs worth.  I can't find any of these movies since I moved them to an external drive months ago.  I do searches for movies on the SSD drive and no results.  But when I do the Disk Utility, I get this:

Mac HD.jpg

How do I remove those movies that I can't find?  My system has slowed down to a crawl and has to boot twice to load.

Operational system is:

mac stat.jpg

Any help would be appreiciated.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), i7 Intel,16GB/1T + SSD /Airport TC

Hi Tim, for more information about the Other category in the Storage display, please see  this Apple Support Topic:

OS X: What is "other" space in About This Mac? - Apple Support

Omni DiskSweeper can show you the precise size and location of all your files. It will inventory your disk starting from the files that take up the most space. It can also give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper. But be careful some of the items may be important to your system.

Movies are not the reason for your system running slow. You have sufficient free space.

How to Free Up Space on The Hard Drive

    1. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
    2. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
    3. Also, see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
    4. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
    5. Be sure to Empty the Trash to recover the space.
    6. Replace the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
    7. Use OmniDiskSweeper or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

    5. 6 Easy Tips to Speed Up OS X Yosemite on Your Mac

Avoid using third-party cleanup software. Usually this software does more bad than good. You don't need it. All computers become slower over time even under normal use. Experienced users erase the hard drive and do a clean install from scratch from time to time; or whenever installing a major OS upgrade. Doing so means you must maintain regular and multiple backups.

Add more RAM or cut back on the number of concurrently running applications and utilities. Remove unnecessary anti-malware software and any software that promises to clean your Mac. Check for runaway processes: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity. Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on dealing with The Spinning Beach Ball of Death.

    The Ultimate Fix

Backup everything, erase the drive, reinstall OS X, and restore your data from the backup. Reinstall third-party software from original media/scratch.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
