ios 9.3.4 iPhone 6 iTunes 12.4.3.1 doesn't recognise iPhone

I am running a 2007 MacBook Pro with El Capitan 10.11.6. When I connect my iPhone 6 or my wife's iPhone 5s to the computer iTunes, Photos or image capture does not recognise them, so I unable to back them up or sync music to them. My iPad2 which is much older than the phones connects fine. I've tried resetting all settings, different cables, rebooting both phones and MacBook. I am out of ideas. Can anybody help.

Been there, tried that and still no joy. Even Apple support couldn't help.

hi do u have an error message? if yes what's the number? did your iTunes up to date? do you see a small icon of your iPhone when you try to connect to iTunes? Try this if nt contact apple care Reset the Lockdown folder in iTunes - Apple Support
