what is "slow", is it slow to open applications and boot? Consider an SSD to replace your mechanical hard drive.

https://eshop.macsales.com/search/2009%20iMac%20ssd

I've used OWC in the past for parts, they are very mac knowledgable and their prices appear to be fair. I do not work for them or receive financial or any other compensation for the recommendation or sale.

is it slow using specific applications? What are you doing in those applications? You have a 7 year old desktop computer with a low level 2 core CPU, if you are expecting production speeds of out this unit with the advances being made in new software (I see you use Adobe CC from the report.) it's not realistic.

I support CC running on several brand new i7 4.0 GHz. iMacs with 16GB RAM and 2GB DDR5 video cards and the verdict from the users I support is Cloud is actually slower on these systems than their predecessors; CS5 and CS6.

Hi Jim, that's pretty slow. How full is your hard drive, for some reason this was not reported on EtreCheck.

If your hard drive space is sufficient, start up inSafe Mode and see if the problem still occurs:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

Restart holding the "shift" key.

(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first. Also give it a little time after start because it runs some maintenance routines in the beginning.) Safe Mode

Your early 2009 iMac is maxed on RAM at 8GB, however the computer is starved for RAM. This would point directly to performance decreases. This also means you need to locate what is using large amounts of RAM when the machine slows down so you can minimize that use. How you do this is by using Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - AM), Apple can help you learn how to use this tool in Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support
