Q: How can I set up wifi on apple extreme plus 2 apple expresses Mac OS 10.6.8, airport 5.6.1

Son has older iMac, 7,1, OS 10.6.8, Airport 5.6.1, both updated as much as possible. Has uVerse, NVG510 Motorola modem, and worked fine until he tried adding 1 Apple express to network, which already included Apple Extreme and 1 other Apple Express, &  network crashed.

I need to:
1. Make the uVerse modem wireless again, as well as ethernet, which is working.

2. Connect Extreme

3. Connect both Expresses

I have looked for solution. Now running disk utility on his iMac.  Can I use my own MacBook Pro, and set up his network that way? Mine is updated, and disk utility MUCH better than his version.

TY for any help.

iMac, OS 10.6.8

What is the exact models of each of the AirPort base stations? If the Extreme is an 802.11ac model, you must use v6.x of the AirPort Utility to administer it. Therefore, using your Mac would be the best tack here.

I assume you meant to say the AirPort Utility, not the disk utility ... correct?

No just finished running disk utility.  No telling when he has run it last.  I have extreme & expresses unplugged from power until I can get the NVG510 Motorola modem's wireless going too.  Should it be in bridge mode? have no idea what that is but just saw a video on how to go into modem and set as that.  At this point, so screwed up the wireless on the motorola isn't connecting either; only ethernet, and know ATT support is very bad.

I tried updating Airport yesterday, and says it is updated, probably to the OS here, which also says it can't be updated. Bottom of Extreme says model 1408.  Newest express is MC414LL/A. Can't see numbers on older one.

I don't know if it will help to reset the Apple devices to factory settings?  You say try from my MacBook?  Then what happens when I leave? I guess they are the same.

Ok, got it. If you don't mind, could you tell me the disk utility & AirPort Utility version numbers that his iMac is running, since its running OS X 10.6.8? I am trying to keep track of each version associated with each version of OS X, but I only have been able to go back to OS X Lion (10.7). It would be much appreciated.

until I can get the NVG510 Motorola modem's wireless going too.  Should it be in bridge mode?

The Motorola NVG510 is a combination DSL modem and wireless router. Also known as a gateway device. I would recommend that you leave this gateway as a router and not reconfigure it as a bridge.

The following link should help you re-enable Wi-Fi on this gateway.

Once you verified that you got it set up the way you want, we can tackle the base stations.

The wifi had been switched off some way in the modem.  Turned on now.  Have powered up extreme and both expresses, and airport utility says can't find anything wireless.

Extreme green but not showing up in airport dropdown menu, or in system prefs by name given to device. Unplugged 2 expresses.  I have a feeling there is some little setting in AU that I am overlooking :-(

It's always best to start slowly. I would suggest that you first verify Internet connectivity with just the Motorola gateway. I assume that you have already done this and found that both wired or wireless clients gained Internet access without any problems.

If that's the case we will start with the AirPort Extreme. In one of your follow-on replies, you mentioned that you did a "total reset." I will assume that you mean you did a "factory default" reset on it ... correct? That is the one you will want to do and you should do the same for both Express base stations.

With all base stations reset, leave them all disconnected from power.

Let's verify your networking goals with these base stations.

    • Will the Extreme be connected to the Motorola by Ethernet?
    • Will both Express base stations be connected back to the Extreme by wireless or by wire?
    • Will both Express base stations be used to extend the Extreme's Wi-Fi network or just for iTunes streaming and/or sharing a USB printer?

As I was rather impatient to get this finished, after discovering the wifi was turned off on the modem, turned it on.  That was when I did the reset.  The Extrem is connected directly to ethernet through the WAN (circle) on the back.  I set up the Ext to be another network after naming it, then set up the expresses to extend the Ext network, and seems to have worked,  I have NO idea how they screwed it all up so much just trying to add an express extender.  While I was looking, I did find another link that helped me make sure of what I was doing here:

Absolutely could not have done without your help.  I included some info in my last reply, NOT for you as you know, but in case someone like me is looking for a similar solution!  Thanks again.

That's great! It's important to share solutions as we are all Apple product users and can help each other. That's how I got started ... and hooked.

Before you know it you will be the AirPort networking guru here!
