Google map links says "unsupported link" on iphone

Hi all,

i am posting here first time and not sure even is this the right place to ask for the query i have. so forgive me if its not.

i am working on a website and having a very serious issue with adding google maps link. i added a google map link onto my website like

https://www.google.ca/maps/dir//data=!4m2!4m1!3e3

thiis link does work fine on computer, laptop and other small devices. but when i try to open it in iphone by opeining the website where i have embeded it says "unsupported link" and it tries to open this link in google map app of the iphone

my struggle is to force it to open it in iphone browser(safari etc) rather than a google map.

it works fine when i remove app from my iphone and if i copy the link from website on my iphone and paste it in safari tab works fine even.

Could someone explain me why iphone is doing this.

i would appreciate any help.

The problem seems to happen when you use the Google URL shortener. If you can go into the web version of your map and just cut and paste the entire URL of the map, it should work. You could also try using another URL shortener if you MUST have the URL shortened, but I'm not sure if that will help.

Basically, I created an annotated Google map and needed to share it via email. No matter what I tried, it did not work when I tried to open it on my iphone. Finally, I just cut and pasted the WHOLE URL in the email and sent that to the person (thus avoiding the Google URL shortening/sharing tool).

I was having the same problem. Took two minutes of playing around with it.

What worked was going into the text message and actually holding your finger down on the link for a second or two instead of just pressing it. Just pressing it opened google maps and gave the unsupported link message and left just an open map with my current location.

Holding the link down for a second or two caused it to turn white, then a white box briefly flashed. Then simply pressing the link opened google maps and showed the driving directions with blues lines showing the route. Then just hit the blue/white arrow navigate button and away you go...
