Q: playback lag on compound clips

Compound clips on timeline: press play - wait 8-9 seconds, watch spinny ball - and then it plays.

Non-compound clips on the same timeline: press play - and they playback normally.

Does NOT effect all projects/sequences in all Libraries/projects.

Up-to-date FCPX and OS, well provisioned iMac, 720p/29.97fps.

Any guesses?

Final Cut Pro X, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I'd like to know what exactly is inside that Compound Clip.  Screen shot of the Compound Clip open in its own Timeline so we can see the contents?

Did you try selecting that Compound and rendering it first manually?

How much RAM in your iMac?

What drive, type of drive, are you Libraries and media on?

Hi Ben - Love the way you're always skeptical about what's inside my clips.

In this case, the compound contains a 70 minute multicam sequence with 4 angles (mixed EOS and Canon XF media). The compound has no orange-bar, so wouldn't benefit from a render. I am working today on my 2013 iMac with 16G of Ram, 2G of GPU RAM, Library on a USB3 7200rpm spinner.

I am pretty sure the bottleneck here was the number of audio tracks I was trying to handle simultaneously - I had one line level input from the board and several other open mics going to cameras. I edited the mCam with all but the Line-In deactivated, and then at the end of that process turned the other lines on before compounding the clip - I usually rough-mix my audio in the tracks of the compound, then compress/EQ on the head of the compound. But no dice, too much audio to handle all at once, so I went back and nixed all but the Line-In and one ambient mic, finished the mix, and I think the result will be quite good enough for the Firefighters Association.
