Q: Macbook Pro 2011 backlight off
So the backlight in my 2011 (Early) unibody macbook pro is now shut off. I've connected a external monitor and tested if everything is running well with the machine, and fortunately enough everything is running perfectly.
The computer needed updating, so when I ran the updater the backlight randomly came back on and illuminated the display, but then turned back off once everything was completed.
I've done the flashlight test, and there is stuff being displayed on the screen, which has pointed me in the direction of the backlight is either burnt out or just not being turned on somehow.
Does anyone have any suggestions on possible fixes?

Please read Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac - Apple Support.
I realize the title and subject are not relevant to your concern, but buried within that document is the following passage containing three links describing the steps to follow.
If you can't change the resolution of your display because you can't see an image, restart your Mac in safe mode to reset the display resolution to defaults.
If starting in safe mode doesn't resolve the issue, reset your Mac's NVRAM and SMC to reset the video ports on your Mac to their defaults.
