I was burning a double layer dvd but the burn sort of froze and now I can't open my lower super drive. I've tried restarting, restarted holding down the option key, and lowering the door to find a hole in which to stick a paper clip (but none seems to exist). Any thoughts

Open Terminal.app then type
drutil eject
Thanks, but this opened the upper drive, but not the lower.
Try unplugging the upper drive
Usual procedure is to restart and keep the mouse pressed down and the drawer should open,
but you may need to preselect the bottom tray prior to restarting.
I've never done that. Do you have instructions handy or shall I search for it?

the 2009-2012 are this same in this regard
From memory there should be an arrow/eject icon on the menubar which you can select between the two dvd drives.
Or just disconnect the power to the top one.
