Q: hp printer update causes hang on boot progress bar

HP Printer Software Update 3.1. installs .kext seems to cause a  hang on boot progress bar.

Recently installed the HP Printer Software Update 3.1. through AppStore. Upon the next boot progress bar became very slow to finally hang on about 98%. Safe boot would not work either.

Web research found kernel extensions to be the culprit. And the fix was removing all non-apple kernel extensions and moving them back one-at-the-time. ( https://www.justinsilver.com/technology/os-x-el-capitan-10-11-1-hanging-on-boot- fixed/  )

It turned out the freshly installed HP Printer Software Update 3.1 reproduced the boot failure in exact the same way. ( hp_io_enabler_compound.kext )

Now AppStore still wants to push this update onto me ( I tried and the problem is revived ).

  • How to get a fault free Printer-driver?
  • Is there a way to rate or give feed-back as with other apps?
  • Why HP needs it's own .kext anyway messing with the systems integrity?
  • What do do next?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 8G Ram 500G HD

Downloaded the 3.1 update ages ago, use it on Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan and the next one,

    All boot fine.

Download it from here, HP Printer Drivers v3.1 for OS X

and then install it. See if it makes any difference.

Sorry Tried it - and fatal fail

If this driver is ages old ( - as you said - ) why would AppStore push it onto me?

And why does it come all so often in the updates?

Downloaded driver package from the link above • Installed it • rebooted

hangs on progress bar as before

Worse: now removing the hp .kext (or any third party .kext) will not work any more

    Result:

boot hangs, safe-boot hangs, verbose boot hangs, resetting eprom no success

only alternative boot and recovery boot possible.

feels like never ever installing HP-Printer driver crap

after many tries now writing this from recovery boot in safari

    • no more boot
    • previous fix broken
    • What options now?

    dont spend too much time

take it to apple store and for $70 /hr/incident fee (fee to install package or re-install OS/X?  i'm unsure the rates)

    LET IT BE THEIR PROBLEM

they can't charge you added time to update a driver they signed, only the normal fee - though re-install (restore to manufacturer install) may be first required

Well sorry re-installing it didn't remove the problem.

You could try running this, http://etrecheck.com/#about to see if there is anything else interfering with your start up.

Post the results here, and we will have a look.
