iPod Classic 7th Generation (Late 2009) - Hard drive start/stops loud

Hi all,

I have an iPod Classic 7th Generation (Late 2009) 160GB Black version. I often hear the hard drive powering up and spinning down which is loud and happens frequently (whenever changing songs).

The hard drive spins and a noise can be heard when it spins down - I have accessed the Diagnostic Mode and the SMART Data of the Hard Drive is below:

SMART DATA

Retracts: 0

Reallocs: 0

Pending Sectors: 0

PowerOn Hours: 102

Start/Stops: 11575

Temp: Current 34c

Temp: Min 56c

Temp: Max 250c

Please can a forum user advise me on why the 'Start/Stops' are very high for only 102 hours of usage and maybe provide further information as to how I can reduce this or if this is normal operation for the iPod.

Any help appreciated, thank you!

Hi turingtest2,

Thank you for your reply! It has been very helpful.

I've reviewed your SMART data stats and my start/stops are much higher than yours even though there is less power on hours; the hard drive starts and stops for each track and is very loud when it stops... I've spoken to Apple support who have mentioned that the iPod should be quiet unless you place it near your ear so could it be that the hard drive is faulty... I have checked the hard drive through the trans software suite and have run a full hard drive test with no bad sectors found.

Thanks

How old is this device? The odd temperatures indicate something has gone wrong which has written scrambled values into the CMOS. Min temperature cannot be less than current. Often running very hot can be a cause of such issues. Has it ever been dropped? When the drive stops it should bring the read/write head away from the drive and park it securely to reduce the risk of damage to the disk surface if it were to be dropped. Perhaps it is overshooting this parking spot, or at least trying to.
