Aug 16, 2016 5:28 PM in response to Parchsby PAHU,Apple removed the open source SMB server Samba from Mac OS X 10.7 and replaced it with its own Windows file sharing protocol called SMBX. This is still the case for all versions of OS X released since 10.7. Apple indicates that SMBX supports both SMB1 and the newer SMB2 protocol, which is much faster and more efficient. However SMBX dropped support for NT Domain Controller features that came with Samba, which in turn stops many brands of multifunction devices from scanning to the Mac because they are unable to authenticate.
With SMB not being a supported service for these devices, it is still possible to scan to the Mac using the FTP protocol. However the FTP service is not a user selectable option in the System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing pane of 10.11 though to 10.7. So to enable FTP you can open Terminal and type;
sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
Then press Return. You then need to enter the Mac's admin password and press Return again.
With FTP enabled on the Mac, you can then create an address book entry in the Savin using the following;
- Protocol: FTP
- Hostname: IP address of the Mac
- File Path: path to the desired folder from the Home folder
- User Name: Full user name of the account owner of the destination folder
- Password: Password for the account above
