MS word and Apple pencil Latency problem

I’m a professor and I’ve been trying to use my Ipad Pro and MS Word for lecturing. There are some challenges. I have several other colleagues who are trying the same thing with their Ipad Pros and we all have the same issues.

Lecture notes in MS word are a mix of texts and jpg's so the documents can run from 4-8 Mb in size. When we first start the lecture, annotating and drawing diagrams typical for lecture with the pencil, everything works as advertised, no latency in the pencil function. After a page or two of lecturing, things go south quickly, latency gets worse. I’ll write an entire word, nothing happens on the screen, then the whole word appears. If I have to erase all of the markings on the page, the program will freeze, sometimes 5-10 seconds as the Ipad processes the erase task. I’ve also noticed that the annotations increase the file size significantly. After a couple of pages writing with the pencil, the file size will increase by a couple of Mb’s. The issue is not the pencil. We have the same effect using a finger to erase or write.

I use Photoshop a lot and it reminds me of someone trying to use Photoshop on a computer that is underpowered for the Photoshop program, with significant lag times between the execution of the function with the mouse and when it appears on the screen. My knowledge of computers is limited, but it seems to me that the Ipad doesn’t have enough power to process text/jpg MS word documents when using the pencil for extensive annotations. I hope I’m wrong about this and there exists a simple fix for this issue on my end. BTW, I’ve tried lecturing with and without being connected to the network. It makes no difference. One other observation, if I heavily annotate the word doc, then save it, shut everything down, reboot the Ipad, and then open the annotated document up, the latency issue is there at first stroke of the pencil. The only way to have the pencil work as advertised is to erase all annotations and have a clean document. I’m wondering if anyone at Apple, when testing the pencil with Word, ever actually tried using it in a real word academic environment. Is anyone else having this issue? Comments, counsel welcomed!
