Q: why does my wife iPad mini ring when her phone rings

My wife has an iPhone 5, iOS 8.3, and an iPad mini iOS 8.3,

both of these iOS's are outdated but she does not care until recently when the iPAD rings/ when her phone rings and I have not been able to undo it.

She is signed into iCloud but there is no 'other devices' in her phone, and the iPad has no preference in FACETIME which I think might be linking these two.

I have 9.3.4 iOS on my 6 and ring through to my Mac selected as other devices but those options do not seem to be available to her/phone/iPad on iOS 8.3

Suggestion welcome, solutions wanted, grateful for any tips or 'how to un-do what seems to have begun on its own.

iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.4

It's a setting. On the phone, go to Settings>Phone>Calls on Other Devices and deselect the iPad.

her phone is iPhone 5 with iOS 8.3, there is no option "calls on other devices", that's the mystery here.

I don't have something with iOS that old. She is asking for troubles not updating since the last security patch. However, it may be that the iPad has the setting for Continuity. See if this helps. Use Continuity to connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac - Apple Support

I understand about asking for trouble, but, hey, are you married? then you might get my problem, she wants to stop the iPad from ringing, the iPad is also on 8.3 as stated, there is no continuity option.

as an added note, my Mac Book Pro I just upgraded with an SSD is too old for continuity,

we are both in our late 60's and I know she needs to upgrade but I have not prepared for that war,

HOWEVER as I close out here I will look at her iPad for continuity, there is also no Preferences in the FACEBOOK app which I think is the missing link, that is how I get my phone calls on my Mac, but I am at 9.3.4 on my phone,

    all so confusing

thank you, I will look at the iPad and set the groundwork for upgrade SOOON

    thank you,

Yes, I am, and I understand, as I am in my 60's as well, until something happens to her device. But that is not my fight to try and win! If her phone and iPad are both ringing at the same time it has to be continuity. Are both devices logged into iCloud with the same Apple ID. It will do that if they are on the same Apple ID and same wi-fi network. See the section on Cellular Phone calls in the link I provided you about Continuity.  As far as calls, Facebook has nothing to do with phone calls, although FaceTime can, depending on how you have that set up.

Here is a writeup on this subject from the iPad User Guide:

    http://help.apple.com/ipad/9/#/iPadf97892b2

It appears that there are several ways to prevent the iPad from ringing when the iPhone rings.

    • Sign the iPhone out of FaceTime
    • Turn the Wi-Fi off on the iPhone

    Hi,

I happen to have an iOS 8 user manual (oldie but goodie) and from it we learn that if all devices are signed in to Facetime with the same Apple ID, the iPad will receive calls on the iPhone. Note, Facetime, not FACEBOOK. The iPad can decline this in Settings > Facetime where there should be an option to turn off cellular calls. So that's where you want to look. Good luck!

Ugh. This may be wrong since it actually linked to the current continuity help.

On iOS 8 on an iPhone the setting is in Settings->Facetime->iPhone Cellular Calls.

On the iPad it is also in Settings->Facetime->Calls From iPhone, since the iPad does not have a Phone section in settings.

Yes, turning that off will stop the calls from her iPhone ringing on her iPad.

Note in passing that your wife may have enabled call continuity by signing in to Facetime on both devices with her Apple ID. That may explain why it just popped up.

I getting so many positive assists here, thank you all, I will follow by turning FACETIME not Facebook (lol) off.

Then, I will buy her flowers and tell her that it's time for iOS 9 and wrestle with that entire process.

Again, thank you all, if you all are following this.
