It appears that your iMac keyboard's "delete" key isn't working like it's supposed to after updating to OS X 10.11.6. I'll be glad to help get those keys working again.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac -- Sometimes it's an issue of simply resetting your iMac's SMC. Open this article and scroll down to the heading "Reset the SMC on Mac desktop computers" and follow the steps there.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up -- Even though your iMac is starting up, safe mode will make sure it's starting up correctly.
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- Use this article if restarting in safe mode didn't help.
Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac -- If your keyboard still isn't working as it should, I recommend backing up your iMac to make sure your personal data is safe. It's always better to "have" a backup than to "need" a backup.
About OS X Recovery -- If you've reached this point and you're having the same problem in a test user account, that would mean this is a system-w. Boot your iMac in Recovery Mode and reinstall the operating system.Thanks for joining Apple Support Communities!
