Emails not showing in Mail

I have a new MacBook Air. I have managed to add my email information to Internet Accounts however when I open mail i get don't get any emails. I only see the menu list at the top. I can't even go into Preferences as it is greyed out. Any ideas on how to get mail to recognise my account?
