Need to reset NVRAM on every boot

Hi there,

I have a MacBook Pro (early 2015). When i turn on FileVault i have to reset the nvram every time i reboot my Mac. If i don't do this the Mac reboots very slow and when it is booted in OSX i have to wait 30 seconds for every keystroke when entering my password. When i do a hard shutdown and nvram reset my MacBook Pro starts fast and i can login normally. When i reboot the issue is back.

What i have tried:

- Create a install media for OS X El Capitain, booted recovery mode, erased Macintosh HD and did a clean install.

- Entered internet recovery mod, erased Macintosh HD and did a clean install.

- NVRAM/PVRAM reset (a lot)

- Tried SMC reset (i cannot verify if this worked?)

I'm really out of ideas. This thing started a while back when i used Bootcamp. But now with a clean install i still have this problem.

When i turn of FileVault the Mac still boots slowly but i can enter my password on normal speed.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I do have the same issue. Macbook Pro Retina 13 early 2015 256SSD 8g RAM

I was in 10.10.5 when this issue first happens more or less one month ago.

10.10.5:

Filevault ON -> impossibile to insert disk unlock password and/or user login. External keyboard works fine and can unlock disk and login (very slow!)

Filevault ON + Reset NVRAM at every boot -> everything ok, fast boot, fast unlock everything ok.

Filevault OFF -> all ok

Create another user, nothing changed.

Complete format using sierra installation drive and full disk erase and format using directly encryption.

10.12

Filevault ON -> impossibile to insert disk unlock password and/or user login. External keyboard does not work same way.

Filevault ON + Reset NVRAM at every boot -> everything ok, fast boot, fast unlock everything ok.

10.12.2

Same behaviour of 10.12

sudo nvram -c and then reboot is like boot without NVRAM reset -> not useful

Have somebody fixed this issue?

I can replicate this very fast on my mac.

I have the same experience. Went to apple store and tech wiped out hard drive and reinstalled app. Tech and I was unable to identify the issue. After several days, I turned on FileVault and encountered the same issue. So issue clearly points to FileVault. The startup takes minutes to start and cannot enter password. Only after resetting NVRAM the machine starts normal. Looking for answers here. on 10.12.2

I also have an early 2015 13" MBP with the same problem. I have installed rEFInd and noticed that it happens there too, and also when I need to select a different drive to boot from (when holding alt+power, e.g. for Boot Camp). It seems that this issue only occurs before an operating system is loaded, because Windows in Boot Camp itself works fine. The FileVault menu actually comes before macOS is loaded, so it makes sense.

Even with FileVault turned off the reboot takes longer. Only with FileVault turned off i can type my password normally.

So basically;

With FV on -> slow boot + slow/unusable password screen -> after the login the Mac is at normal speed.

With FV off -> slow boot + normal password input-speed -> after the login the Mac is at normal speed.

After a NVRAM reset the Mac is at normal speed everywhere with FV on or off. But when i reboot i got the same issues again.
