Q: Why does Apple ID work for iOS devices and for Yosemite ...but not for iCloud?

Recently i upgraded to Yosemite. As such I was forced to change my PWD for Apple ID.  I have ONE AppleID account. After changing PWD, the other iOS devices asked for upgrade change  and all work.

EXCEPT iCloud refuses to accept my new Apple ID... All other devices, updates work fine with the new AppleID PWD..

What is wrong with iCloud?

How do I force it to accept the Apple ID that all other devices/systems accept?

Hi Eric:  Well... can't very well sign out if I NEVER have been able to sign in... under Yosemite since the upgrade.

I use it successfully in settings in iOS to see my device(s) info....or respond to request to update Apple ID from other services...

What I try is in Yosemite... .. go to System Prefs, select iCloud...it asks for Apple ID sign in... I use the SAME and ONLY one I use for other needs,,... iTunes, iOS , etc etc

It refuses to accept the one everyone else accepts... including opening Apple ID support web site itself..

    Weird.. huh

I have a call in to a Sr Apple rep... will report back after I hear..

    Thanx  Jim B

    HI again...

Safe mode made no difference In outcome....

    After safe mode WEnt to System prefs; them launched iCloud.;

entered the SAME Apple ID I JUST used to enter this discussion....

still said iCloud would not accept...please restart and try again

    restarted....same result...

i Am plenty ****** off with this AppleID debacle ... ONE ID is all I ever had....it .works everywhere Else..iPhone, iPad... Andworks OK in parts of Yosemite, including signing onto this discussion etc..

.why is iCloud such  kludgy SW?  I avoid it where I can. But need to have my Yosemite system signed in to iCloud to get proper syncing to my other devices....right?

    any other ideas?

    Probably a long shot.

    Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Hi Eric:  Well removing ~Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist did not work...

Remember.. I signed onto this discussion thread with my current AppleID + PWD   as OK....

    Oh well... good try..

BTW here is the iCloud error pane as I see it ... I first use System Preferences, then open iCloud

It asks for my Apple ID...

If you go to the link below and sign in, is the computer associated with your Apple ID? If not, try adding it.

    HI Eric

the link you referred to in your last reply was not in your reply?

    DId I miss something?

i think you are on to something....IF in iOS 9.3.4, I got to Apple ID....then ask to see the devices associated with the acct, my iPhone, iPad are correctly listed...HOWever...the iMac listed shows as OS 10.11.6. (El Capitan)...BUT, my iMac

    is OS 10.10.5 or Yosemite.

Then if any of them are not correct, AppleID asks to say No and replace the PWD.

should i try this?  Is this the mis-communication causing my issue?

ive already changed the PWD several times....each time, iTunes refuses it Whether iOS OR OS 10.10. ....iOS AppleID works OK as does the sign up for this discussion forum No matter how many times I reset the PWD.

the el cap is there b/c when I First upgraded from MtLion I used el cap...but then Mail failed ..so i backed off to Yosemite. Got MAil fixed but ended up with this AppleID fiasco

boy ...this is Apple craziness I've never seen before...

Please s end me the missing link...I'll try it first

    thanx.  Jim b

    HI Eric:  thanx for idea

FFirst of all...my current Apple ID: User ID PWD....works fine here...I can logon to AppleID For this discussion...in fact right now I am using my iPad under iOS9.4.3 and its Safari to pen this response!

AFter following your link.. I login into AppleID and go to the "Manage Area". Then I look at

the Details listing for devices, yes It  Does list my iMac...with correct name, correct serial #.  Except it lists the OS as El Cap...BUt I have Yosemite running now....

SO yeah... AppleID knows my iMac...except for correct OS..BUT no option to change it...just leave it or delete it.

If I did delete it, would that free up iCloud to then accept my Apple ID? Should I try this next?

it MUST be that iCloud sees that erroneous OS (El Cap...instead of Yosemite) and thus refuses to verify my iMac..what do you think??

STill...I Cannot get quirky iTunes to accept my current AppleID.... Discussions does, iPhone &  iPad do,

TThan X for help so far...what next?

You are welcome. Since it shows the wrong OS, your ID may have something messed up. I'm out of ideas, so try contacting Apple.

Hi Eric:  Yes... your instincts are intact....  I got to a SR MGR Tech level in Apple.. He used their "remote" tool to watch as I tried to connect w/iCloud. He could NOT diagnose the problem...We even tried another Admin acct... and Safe mode... all to no avail.

He said it was too messed up to fix.

Final suggestion?  Re install Yosemite and see if iCloud can then be ID'ed w/ my Yosemite...

I have to take my iMac back in to my certified Apple repair shop (who installed the new HD and 10.10.5)

Will get a re-install of Yosemite and see if iCloud then will work.

Until then... my Calendar, Contacts will be synced manually (by me).

Thanx again for all your help... After the re-install i'll open a new discussion thread as a follow-up to this one..

    Cheers, Jim B
