How to get rid of "Frequently Visited Sites"?

I receive/read my news online, and I have Safari version 9.1.2 running on OS X 10.11.6 and more often than not, after clicking on an article to read it, then exiting the tab, then next time I open up a new tab, there will be a section along with my favorite called "Frequently Visited Sites". Under the visited sites section, will be an article or two, in which I have already read, but only visited once, so I don't want to see it anymore. It drives me crazy! Is there a way to get rid of the Frequently Visited Sites, but be able to keep the Favorites section when I open up a new tab?

You seem to be the only one who could answer this person question. It always amazes me why people THINK they know the answer and respond with something else.

I pulled up one response to this question on another website and not only was this question not answered the person who answered it brought up a totally unrelated situation and the rest of the post followed that instead of the original question.

Thanks PapaCarello
