Q: FaceTime not working via Airport Timecapsule

HI All,

I am not new to apple, I have and iPad Air2 and iPhone 6.  As I work away from family FaceTime is a great app to stay in touch, and I have no problem with the app on either my iPad or phone.

I have recently bought a MacBook and I also bought an airport timecapsule to act as my wifi and back up.

However, I am having an issue with FaceTime on all devices since I replaced my d link wifi with the airport time capsule.  FaceTime will ring but refuses to connect no matter which device I use.  When I remove the airport time capsule and put my d link wifi back in place and reconnect, FaceTime functions no problem.

can anyone offer any advice, I have not approached apple support yet.  The time capsule is only 1 month old, Internet and back up of MacBook is fine, just FaceTime

Let's start by having you review, and trying out, the following Apple Support article. Please post back your results. This Apple Support article should also prove helpful.

TThanks Tesserax, I have reviewed the support article.  I'm still having the same issue that FaceTime will not work over the time capsule wifi.  Internet and back up all OK.  Even other video apps such as duo or imo work OK over the time capsule wifi.

i Have logged out of facetime and iMessage, then back in but still the same issue, FaceTime says connecting, but never does.  If I revert to my old wifi, it works?...  I am defuddled

Ok, let's take a look at your network.

What is the make and model of your Internet modem or gateway? I already know that you have an 802.11ac Time Capsule. Is it connected to the modem by Ethernet or by wireless?

    HI,

ok it is an ISP provided modem, the label says it's a Pirelli f4202n f-000-1a1-ax

Ok, the Pirelli is not a simple modem but a combination modem and Ethernet router, also known as a gateway device.

I assume that you have the Time Capsule (TC) connected directly to it by Ethernet. Has the TC been reconfigured as a bridge, i.e., Router Mode = Off (Bridge Mode) on the Network tab of the AirPort Utility?

Hi Tesserax,  oh I see, yeah you are right regards the Pirelli, supplied by my ISP, one port is for Telephone, Two ports for digital TV, and 2 ports for Internet.

Y are correct that the TC is connected to the 'gateway' directly, but I have not configured it as a bridge?

could that be a direction to try?

    Yes.

I believe the issue with FaceTime is based on your current network configuration will not support it ... at least, not as it is configured now.

You basically have two routers in series which will cause a "double NAT" condition. This is not only not very efficient but is basically keeping apps, like FaceTime, from working properly.

The simple solution is to reconfigure the downstream router, your TC in this case, as a bridge. It will still provide you with a wireless network but it should not resolve the double NAT & FaceTime issues.
