Q: why do group text messages come to the Mail app as emails instead of Messages app as SMS messages?

My wife (with an iMac, iPhone 6, and iPad Air 2) is in a text message group with myself (on a MacBook Air, iPhone 6s, and iPad Pro 9.7) and my son (on a Samsung something or other phone). The messages come to me on all my devices, to my son on his Galaxy something or other, but for my wife they come to her as emails in the Mail app (on her Mac, phone and pad, but don't show up in the Messages app on her iOS or OS X devices. How do we fix this so they show up in the Messages app rather than email messages in the Mail app for her?

    Hi,

I would ask if the ID you are sending to her with these SMS messages is the same one she is actually using in Messages.

Basically she should have an Apple ID that is her iMessages ID.

She should also have an iPhone Number - for the iPhone obviously.

Adding the Apple ID to the iPhone links the two fro iMessages to be synced.

An iPhone with at list iOS 8 and a Mac with at least Yosemite can then link the iPhone to the LAN and use the Apple ID in use on both to link the two for SMS.

The SMS Option on the iPhone has to be On (so that iMessages can be sent as SMS when the iPhone cannot get either a good enough Carrier service and in not linked to a WiFi service).

If her iPhone and Mac are not linked for the SMS part then she will not get the SMS on the Mac.  It should still be on the iPhone.

I have not linked an additional email to my iMessages set up so I don't know if such an ID will work for the SMS syncing.

IF the ID you are trying to send to is not the iPhone number for your Wife or the linked Apple ID then you should get an option asking if you want to send it as an email.
