Q: How to change the Apple ID on one of two devices?

I have two iPhones with the same Apple ID that are used by two family members.

When either makes or receives a phone call, the call history shows the same on each phone, presumably due to having a single Apple ID.

My plan is to create a new Apple ID, sign out of one of the iPhones and then sign into it again using the new Apple ID.  (I realize that I will lose some apps and photos but this is a minor problem in that there are few of each.)

Does this sound like a plan?  Am I missing something?

Thanks for any affirmation or disagreement.

    Hello!

This is a perfect plan to avoid confusion.

Once you create a new Apple ID you can do family share to share purchases between the two Apple ID's.

If not, any app you have on the device (with the new apple id ), will still be linked to the old Apple ID. This means when there is an update for an app you will need to enter in the password for the Apple ID the app was originally downloaded with. You could always delete the app and redownload it under the new Apple ID as well, but anything that was purchased would have to be repurchased(which is why I recommend Family Share).

Create and start using an Apple ID - Apple Support

Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

Share purchased content with Family Sharing - Apple Support

    Hopefully this helps!

It sounds like a perfect plan... However you should know that it is not as easy as it sounds. There are numerous sevices that Apple provides, all of which are liked to the Apple ID. For example on any iOS device...

Settings > iCloud > (Scroll Down) Delete Account > Sign in with the new Apple ID -- Note: This only affects the device

Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID > Sign Out > Sign in with the new Apple ID

Settings > Messages > Send and Received > Apple ID > Sign Out > Sign in with the new Apple ID

Settings > FaceTime > Apple ID > Sign Out > Sign in with the new Apple ID

These are the basics. For a full list read here > What to do after you change your Apple ID email address or password - Apple Support

I just want you to know what you're getting into,

    Mal

First, thanks to those who took the time to reply.  Each answer was very helpful.

However, an alternate solution won out.  I'm posting it here in the event it helps someone else in the future.

Another person called Apple Support who suggested turning off iCloud on both phones and then turn off handoff on both phones.  This seems to have fixed the problem of a shared phone history.

Once again, thanks for all answers!
