Q: Bootcamp problems

Mac Pro (early 2008) with four internal disks so can run Mountain Lion, El Capitan (just added yesterday) and Windows (7x64).  Each system has dedicated disk, no partitions. Also use VWware Fusion (vs 6.04) so I can run Windows  under virtual machine through Mountain Lion.

Everything was running fine until yesterday when I installed the fourth disk and then installed El Capitan on it.  That installation went fine, but now I cannot run Windows in either native or virtual machine mode. In Native Mode Bootcamp does not recognize that the Windows disk exists.  In virtual mode, Windows tries to install, but fails with error messages: Startup failed VMware-Virtual IDE HD, from which I conclude that it can find the disk, but cannot connect to the operating system on it.

When I load my Windows 7x64 startup disks and attempt to do maintenance on the Windows system, I get the message that the maintenance package on the disk is not compatible with the version of Windows I am attempting to repair.

I know that I can clean the Windows disk and start over with Bootcamp and a new install on Windows.  However, I will lose the program files on that disk and I need them.  At this time I have no way to access the Windows disk.  What am I missing?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Was the Windows disk connected when El Capitan was installed/upgraded? It may have overwritten the MBR.

Do you recall if the Windows installation used EFI Boot or a legacy MBR/BIOS boot? If you do not, let us try and create a MBR on disk0. It does not touch any data on your disk, but only adds an MBR overlay on your GPT-only disk.

Please download and install GPT Fdisk - https://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ - and I can give you steps to recreate an MBR on disk0.

There is also another method to check if you used EFI boot, but it is a bit tedious, because you have to mount the EFI partition of each disk and look for a Microsoft directory in the EFI partition. If you want to check, please see Re: Can't resize Macintosh HD partition for mounting the EFI partition to check. You have to mount each disk's EFI sequentially, and unmount it, before you move to next disk, to avoid further complications.

I don't recall.  I do believe that I installed EC through ML, so may have also had Windows open.

Do not recall.  Only know that VMware Fusion in starting Windows is looking for EFI (which I understand means a GPT disk)

         Done

Will do this this afternoon and get back to you.

Thanks again for all of your help!

I looked at the reference you gave for this and it is not clear to me how to proceed.  Please note that each disk I have has only one partition.  Therefore we only need to check the "disk0" which has Windows on it.  Please advise

If you notice, there is an EFI Partition on more than one disk. The other issue is the missing EFI on the Windows disk.

The diskNs1 entries are EFI, except your Windows disk. Do you recall an EFI Partition on the Windows disk in the past?

OK, the partitions are system partitions.  I see that there is none on the Windows disk (Disk0).  Apparently that is what VMware Fusion is looking for based on the error messages I have received (and forwarded copy to you).  So, can we add an EFI partition?

There are two methods of adding an EFI partition. Erase the disk, or repair the disk. Let us try repair first.

Boot from your ML installation (El Capitan will just add an additional variable, which we can avoid for the time being). In OS X Terminal, run

    diskutil repairDisk diskN

Most likely N is 0, but please confirm.
