I see this greyed-out dialogue box briefly at startup. This is new and it seems to be at the same time I have been experiencing a slower response from the system. I have run anti-adware and malware and diskwarrior which has improved things, but this unfamiliar box remains. What does it mean, and is it something that should concern me?

I don't see any obvious 3rd party software that might be causing it.
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Running OSX 10.10.5 on a late 2013 MBP (15", 16 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD) this message popped up every time I started my Mac. Following Eric I made a safe boot -->no message and afterwards booted up the machine normally. This time the "Message Receiver" windows did not disappear.
I'm not sure what caused it, but it seems solved so far.
No, it's still there...
At work I shut down and started my MacBook several times without seeing this "Message Receiver" windows popping up. Just arrived at home from work and voilà: IT IS THERE AGAIN !
Has anybody any ideas ? It does not seem to be malicious but it's unnerving.
My MacBook has now about three years on it and this thing did not appear since a few days ago. Im very careful not to run many 3rd party software on my Mac (except MS Office and some programs for editing the pictures of may Olympus).

Best guess would be GoToMeeting.
That one is an app which was used for taking part in Capture One webinars. It was installed in July 2015 - and the first appearance of this mysterious window was only a few days ago.
In the last few hours I removed the remaining "Synology" agents (I use a Qnap instead) and rebooted my Mac - no "Message Receiver"....
I will remove the G2M app as well and report any changes.
I've had G2M on my Mac for years, having used it only once, and never seen that dialog, but it is a term they use a lot.
Not familiar with Synology, but the fact that it uses SIMBL is always a red flag.
Still puzzled by the lack of commonality with what the OP has installed.
I don't think this is related, but trustee rapport has often caused issues for most Mac users, so unless it's required by one of your financial institutions, you are almost certainly better off without it.
Also note that Flash Player was updated again on Tuesday.
Since yesterday and after removing the remains of my Synology NAS software the "Message receiver" did not show up any more. Furthermore I have the impression (it's only a feeling) that my Mac starts "smoother" than before. So I decided to leave G2M where it is for the time beeing.
Synology and its apps used to cause massive problems with my Macs (and a few Windows clients as well). For example it delayed the shutdown of my MBP to 1 1/2 minutes (now its back to 5 secs !!!). That was one (if not the main) reason to switch to QNAP....
But to give MadMacs0 some credit: my first step was going over the Etrecheck log the TO posted - not finding any similarities....
And thanks for pointing me to the last FlashPlayer update (always clicking away the reminder !).
Back again....
Since my last post in Oct I got rid of almost all 3rd party software, except a few I need for work. I also upgraded to 10.12.1 (no probs there). And you know what ? The Message Receiver windows pops up again. Very fast, but it's there.
It's quite unnerving...
And no solution in sight.
