I have two pairs of headphones I'm trying out, both work 100% with my IPhone, but when I plug the headphones into my IPod I cannot use the volumn or pause buttons. The music comes in 100% clear though, just can't use controls. I know its not the headphones since they work with my phone.
Yep, that design goes back to 2006. The manual shows the older pre-volume control Apple earbuds. I suspect it doesn't have the 4th ring in the connector to pick up the control signals. The other reason for asking about age is that the jack sockets can fail. I've replaced a couple in iPod classics.

try resetting the iPod, keep in mind you should backup anything on it before proceeding.
Successfully reset but did not fix. 😟
How old is the iPod and what model is it?

Ipod Nano 2nd generation. Wondering if that is just not a function that old of Ipod is capable of.
