Q: Adding USB drive to the Time Capsule initial and subsequent backups.

I am adding a USB disk to my Time Capsule unit. Is there a way to make the first backup with the USB drive directly attached to my MacBook Pro and then attach the USD drive to the Time Capsule and have subsequent backups recognize that initial one?

Sorry, but no....if you are asking about Time Machine backups.

The reason for this is that there is a huge difference between a "local" drive connected directly to your Mac and a "network" drive connected to your router......since Time Machine backs up differently to a "local" drive than it does to a "network" drive.

To help speed the initial backup, connect your Mac to one of the three LAN <--> ports using an Ethernet cable, and be sure to turn off the WiFi on the Mac before you click to start the backup.
