Hi - I have a MacBook Pro (mid-2011). Working in Mail. The spell check is not working. I switched back and forth between Check Spelling Before Sending and Check Spelling as I Type. Each let words go by that are simple. "Chack" (check) "begn," begin "strngr" (stranger). Would love some help. It used to work but now now.

I was having the same problem.
It resolved after I changed language to U.S. English (it had been "Automatic by Language")
Go to: System Preferences > Keyboard > Text > Spelling > U.S. English.
Tried all suggestions and the settings were already as suggested. Did not work for me.
Hi - Thanks for this. I went one step further and it worked. When I clicked on US English I scrolled down to Set Up. Then clicked on US English within that window. I tested it two or three times and spell check is working. Thanks so much.

System Preferences/Keyboard/Text - is Check spelling automatically checked?
I have a problem with Spell check running behind one email. So when I check spelling the checker is still working with words from my previous email. Your keyboard may be running behind as well. I have made the change to US English to see if that helps.
I routinely copy the text and move to an editor paste in the copy check spelling and then move it back to email as a work around. Painful.
