Safari lags when on YouTube

Hey Friends

Since quite some time when I'm on YouTube watching Videos, Safari gets terribly slow, the mouse cursor lags behind, and scrolling isn't responsive anymore. When quitting Safari and reopening YouTube, it's fine for a short period of time, but then safari starts to be unresponsive again.

I'm using Safari 9.1.1, on a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, 256Gb, 8Gb, 2.4Ghz

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thank you for your help

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Youtube is still lagging and is almost unusable. I did everything above.

I activated the error console in safari, and when I'm on Youtube and it's lagging it show a lot of error messages:User uploaded file

It says it blocked frames, so could that be the cause of the lagging??

thanks in advance

Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Prefeences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Your Etrecheck post shows that your machine is running out of RAM and swapping to your boot drive. This will make your Mac run slow as ..ll. Quit all applications that you are not immediately using to free up your available RAM. If you have just finished playing a game, I would reboot before using Safari.

If you have just powered on your Mac, it will be sluggish for a few minutes because there is considerable house-keeping in progress by System processes that detract from your CPU and storage response. Aside from all of the other recommendations here, I would boot into Safe mode, followed by a normal reboot. Wait five minutes, and then check Safari again with Youtube.

If there is network congestion, or edge device failure in the hops to the Youtube server, then that will contribute to the slowness, and video aberrations.

Note the wall time that you are experiencing the slowness. From Launchpad : Other, click on Console, and at the bottom of the console log, look for your current time, and see if there are any entries from Safari that may suggest errors. Quit Console when you are done.

Safari 9.1.1 and Mavericks 10.9.2..

The problems may be due to outdated software.

Open System Preferences > App Store then click Check Now or open the App Store then select Updates from the menu.

Aside from that, most YouTube content requires Flash so open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab then click Delete All under Browsing Data and Settings. Quit and relaunch Safari and try video.

Thank you for your ideas!

Unfortunately the steps didn't help. I haven't any extensions installed, I deleted all the cookies, and emptied my cache, but YouTube still doesn't work properly. When I click for example to pause the video, the window freezes, and it pauses the video after about five seconds. Or when I try to scroll in the timeline, it's lagging behind significantly.

OSX is also updated...

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Just in case if it didn't solve the problem still or faced it again in the future..

tried clearing cache didn't really work?

you'd be left with clean installation of the OSX as your only solution to fix.

but hopefully it won't be necessary unless your Mac is all messed up 😁
